How to dispose of paint?

Never pour paint down a drain or put liquid paint in household rubbish. Latex paint can usually be dried out solid and then discarded with normal waste; oil-based paint is household hazardous waste almost everywhere and must go to a collection site.

Latex and oil are handled completely differently

To dry small amounts of latex, leave the lid off in a ventilated place away from children and pets, or stir in cat litter or a commercial paint hardener until it is solid throughout. Many areas require the lid off so collectors can see it is cured.

Rules are set locally and they genuinely differ — some areas take latex at kerbside once solid, others do not. Check your county or municipal waste authority, and look for a PaintCare drop-off if your state has the programme.

Usable leftover paint is better donated than discarded. Schools, theatre groups and habitat-restore stores often take it.

How we sourced this

This answer is composed from our knowledge base, which holds only what a regulator, a standards body or a manufacturer supports. The sources behind it are listed below with the date we accessed each one. If a claim on this page has no source under it, that is a bug — tell us and we will fix it.

Where a figure is product-specific — coverage, dry time, recoat time, temperature limits — we point you at the manufacturer's technical data sheet rather than printing a general number as though it were a specification. That distinction is the most common error in this trade, and it is the one that costs people a repaint.

Common mistakes

  • Pouring paint down a drain or onto the ground. It is illegal in many places and it reaches the water supply.
  • Putting liquid paint in the household bin. Most collectors reject it, and latex must be solid first.
  • Treating oil-based paint as ordinary waste. It is household hazardous waste almost everywhere.
  • Throwing out usable paint. Schools, theatre groups and reuse stores generally want it.
