How to clean a paint brush with dried paint?

Match the cleaner to the paint. Water-based paint washes out with warm water and a little dish soap; oil-based paint needs the solvent named on the can, usually mineral spirits. Clean before the paint sets, because a cured brush rarely recovers.

Getting the shape back

Work the bristles against your palm under running water until the water runs completely clear, paying attention to the ferrule — paint that dries where the bristles meet the metal splays the brush permanently and is the usual reason a good brush stops cutting a clean line.

Spin or shake out the water, comb the bristles straight, and dry the brush hanging or lying flat. Store it in its original wrapper or a paper sleeve to hold the chisel edge.

For a short break mid-job, wrap the loaded brush tightly in plastic instead of washing it. It will be ready hours later.

How we sourced this

This answer is composed from our knowledge base, which holds only what a regulator, a standards body or a manufacturer supports. The sources behind it are listed below with the date we accessed each one. If a claim on this page has no source under it, that is a bug — tell us and we will fix it.

Where a figure is product-specific — coverage, dry time, recoat time, temperature limits — we point you at the manufacturer's technical data sheet rather than printing a general number as though it were a specification. That distinction is the most common error in this trade, and it is the one that costs people a repaint.

Common mistakes

  • Letting paint dry in the ferrule, which splays the bristles permanently and is why a good brush stops cutting a clean line.
  • Using water on an oil-based brush, or solvent on a latex one.
  • Standing a brush bristle-down in a jar, which bends the tip out of shape.
  • Storing it loose in a drawer instead of in its wrapper, which loses the chisel edge.
