How long to wait between coats of paint?
Use the recoat time printed on your product's label or technical data sheet. It is product-specific and there is no general figure worth trusting — recoat time is almost always longer than the time the surface takes to feel dry.
Why "dry to touch" is the wrong signal
"Dry to touch" means the surface has skinned over. "Ready to recoat" means enough solvent or water has left the film that a second coat will bond instead of lifting the first. Painting on the first signal rather than the second is what causes the finish to drag, wrinkle or pull away.
Cold air and high humidity both extend the wait, sometimes by hours. If the manufacturer gives a range, take the longer end when the room is cool or damp.
How we sourced this
This answer is composed from our knowledge base, which holds only what a regulator, a standards body or a manufacturer supports. The sources behind it are listed below with the date we accessed each one. If a claim on this page has no source under it, that is a bug — tell us and we will fix it.
Where a figure is product-specific — coverage, dry time, recoat time, temperature limits — we point you at the manufacturer's technical data sheet rather than printing a general number as though it were a specification. That distinction is the most common error in this trade, and it is the one that costs people a repaint.
Common mistakes
- Recoating on "dry to touch" rather than the product's stated recoat time. The second coat lifts the first.
- Using one product's recoat time for another. It is product-specific and the spread between products is large.
- Ignoring cold or humidity, both of which extend the wait, sometimes by hours.
- Assuming longer is always safer. Some products have a maximum recoat window, after which you must sand before the next coat.
