How to make colour brown paint?
Mix red and yellow to get orange, then add a little blue. Brown is simply a dark, desaturated orange, which is why the shortcut of mixing all three primaries works. Add blue slowly — a drop too much turns the mix grey and you cannot pull it back without starting again.
Getting the shade you actually want
Any two complementary colours also make brown — red with green, or blue with orange — because complements cancel each other's saturation. That is often a cleaner route than three primaries, since you are controlling one variable instead of two.
To warm the result, add more red or yellow. To cool it toward taupe, add a touch more blue. To lighten without dulling, add yellow rather than white: white makes brown chalky and moves it toward beige.
